“Keep It Sweet” review by John Book

June 3rd, 2007

When I reviewed his first release in this column, I said that St. Christopher is a musical genius in his infancy, there is a bit of craft in his work which shows determination and maybe perfectionism? If people give him a chance, he could easily become this generation’s Todd Rundgren. He hasn’t proven me wrong with his brand new CD, Keep It Sweet (Eleven23 Records).

The craft that I heard on his previous CD is displayed on fine form on the album, and there seems to be a bit more confidence in his guitar playing and singing, and with that a bit of swagger with each step. The title track “Keep It Sweet” sounds a bit like the Dan Reed Network, where you feel the raw emotion and you want to show respect and say “right on” with each and every lyric. Most of the songs are about love, both the good and the bad, but he throws out a very delightful surprise with track 3.

I’m listening to the song and the first thing I thought was “oh shit, he’s covering the Rise Robots Rise tune “All Sewn Up”, one of my favorite groups of the early 90’s. In 2007, St. Christopher revives the song in the form of “By The Way”, and while his approach seems in comparison a bit lighter, even with the chorus and verse placement rearranged, one can still hear a song which longs for the good times, when things weren’t so reliant on technology and Wikipedia searches as they are now. St. Christopher’s take on things is bright and hopeful.

His way of thinking is yes, there is hope, and Keep It Sweet explores the wonder and beauty of life and all that there is to learn and experience.

It makes me wish it was possible to give him a bigger budget for his music and means of promotion, for this guy should be heard and absorbed in the way people take to the pop masters of the past. He is a pop master of the now, able to put himself in a diverse range of styles to show he knows his capabilities. Thought his singing and inventive guitar work, he is willing to take his listeners on a high they never want to get down from.John Book -MusicForAmerica.org

“St. Christopher Keeps it (real) Sweet With His Extraordinary Talents.

St. Christopher is a brilliant talent. The music from Keep it Sweet is like sampling a tasty box of goodies. This CD keeps your audio pallette surprised as each tune is a new sensation of sound.

His guitar work and melodies contain many flavors and influences from reggae to slow grooves are very creative. His sweet vocals, not unlike Prince in his most sensuous moments show that St. Christopher is not just some side of beef, though he does have the most impressive physique. The vocals, guitar licks and beats create a slow seduction to the ear.

So goes St. Christopher’s ardent, but gentle sound. This once again proves that one can attract a lot more with the sweetness of honey than with any of the hard sell musicality. Rarely is there such sensual music that is easy to listen to but still grabs your ear. St. Christopher’s Musical efforts stand upon his merits and what results is a hit!

This saucy young dude from Asbury Park NJ has a long road of promising music ahead of him.”
